Alberta Girl has granted compensation to a lawsuit on infection that leads to four -fold amputation

A family from Grande Prairie, Alta. has recently been awarded nearly $16.5 million in a lawsuit regarding the medical care of their daughter, identified only as KB, who tragically became a quadruple amputee at the age of 15 due to a bacterial infection that was not treated in a timely manner.

The incident occurred on February 19, 2011, when KB was admitted to Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie for treatment of respiratory Syncytial virus (RSV). Just three days later, she went into septic shock due to a severe lung infection and had to be transferred to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton for further treatment.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, KB suffered irreversible damage to her limbs as a result of complications from the infection. She ultimately had to undergo the amputation of her right hand, parts of four fingers on her left hand, and both legs – one above the knee and one below.

In a recent court decision, Justice Avril Inglis of the Court of King’s Bench awarded KB compensation for her ongoing care needs, which includes funding for prostheses, support staff, and various therapies to assist with her health. Additionally, KB’s mother, identified as DB, was granted nearly $650,000 in compensation for lost income and caregiving expenses.

Speaking to CBC News, DB expressed relief and hope for her daughter’s future, stating, “She has shown so much strength and resilience throughout her life… It’s just reassuring to know that she will have the resources she needs to succeed.”

The lawsuit, which spanned from 2022 to 2023, found family doctor Dr. Mark Guhle liable for KB’s injuries, as he failed to recognize the severity of her condition in a timely manner. Inglis determined that Guhle had the opportunity to intervene before it was too late, but neglected to take the necessary steps to prevent further harm.

Stacy Koumarelas, a lawyer representing KB in the case, emphasized the importance of not just financial compensation, but also restoring KB’s dignity and providing for her future care needs. She noted that the costs associated with KB’s ongoing care are significant and essential for her well-being.

Despite the challenges they have faced, KB and her family remain resilient and grateful for each day. As KB’s mother reflected, “We cannot change the past, but we can choose to live in gratitude and appreciate the blessings that come our way.”

The family’s journey serves as a reminder of the strength and perseverance that can arise in the face of adversity, and the importance of seeking justice and support in times of need.
