Alberta government axes AHS board — again — in latest health reform move

The Alberta Health Services (AHS) board has been ousted by the UCP government for the second time under Premier Danielle Smith’s leadership. This move is part of a broader restructuring of the health system in the province, aimed at decentralizing the management of healthcare services.

In a recent government news release, Andre Tremblay was appointed as the official administrator, effectively serving as a one-person board of directors. Additionally, Tremblay will take on the roles of interim CEO of Alberta Health Services and deputy minister of the provincial health ministry simultaneously.

The decision to overhaul the leadership of AHS comes as the government continues to transition the agency’s responsibilities to new Crown corporations. The latest addition, Assisted Living Alberta, joins three other entities tasked with overseeing different aspects of healthcare in Alberta.

Health Minister Adriana LaGrange’s office cited the need for increased government oversight in the winding down of AHS as a regional health authority. This move is intended to facilitate a smoother transition to a hospital-based service provider model.

The sudden change in AHS leadership has raised concerns among healthcare professionals. Braden Manns, a former AHS executive, criticized the government’s focus on organizational restructuring rather than addressing frontline care issues. The consolidation of power under Tremblay as the sole decision-maker has also raised questions about accountability and transparency within the agency.

Tremblay, a seasoned government official with experience in various ministries, will now lead the $16.4-billion organization with over 88,000 employees. In a memo to AHS staff, he outlined his priorities, including overseeing the completion of the system refocusing initiative and ensuring a seamless transition to a new operational model.

The Alberta NDP’s health critic, Sarah Hoffman, expressed concerns about the mass firings and chaos within AHS, emphasizing the importance of accessible and reliable public healthcare services for all Albertans.

Overall, the restructuring of AHS and the government’s increased involvement in healthcare management signal a significant shift in the delivery of healthcare services in Alberta. The impact of these changes on patient care and the overall efficiency of the healthcare system remains to be seen.
