Alberta Premier Danielle Smith visits Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith recently visited Mar-a-Lago, the Florida home of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump. Smith took to social media to confirm the visit, noting that she had a “friendly and constructive conversation” with Trump during her time at the Palm Beach mansion.

During her visit, Smith emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Canadian energy relationship, highlighting how energy exports from Alberta support hundreds of thousands of American jobs. She also engaged in discussions with key allies of the incoming administration, who expressed their support for a strong energy and security relationship with Canada.

Accompanying Smith at Mar-a-Lago were Canadian celebrity investor Kevin O’Leary and psychologist and media personality Jordan Peterson. The trio posed for photographs in the luxurious setting, showcasing their presence at the high-profile location.

Looking ahead, Smith is set to attend Trump’s inauguration ceremony in Washington on Jan. 20. In addition to the inauguration, she plans to host various events in Washington and meet with energy groups, congresspeople, and other officials to further discussions on the U.S.-Canadian relationship.

In response to threats from Trump regarding potential tariffs on Canada and Mexico if measures to address illegal immigration and drug smuggling are not taken, Alberta announced plans to invest $29 million in creating a border patrol team under the command of the Alberta Sheriffs. The team, equipped with officers, patrol dogs, surveillance drones, and narcotics analyzers, aims to intercept illegal border crossings and prevent the smuggling of drugs and firearms.

While Smith opposes tariffs on Canadian and U.S. goods, other provincial leaders have taken different approaches. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has spoken out against the tariffs in international media and criticized Trump’s suggestion of making Canada the 51st U.S. state. Ford proposed a renewed strategic alliance for Canada and the U.S. on energy and implemented enhanced security measures along the border.

Despite the challenges posed by potential tariffs, Smith remains committed to diplomacy in addressing the issue. She stated that on behalf of Albertans, she will continue engaging in constructive dialogue with the incoming administration and elected officials to further Alberta’s and Canada’s interests. The diplomatic approach is aimed at avoiding the implementation of tariffs and maintaining a strong relationship between the two nations.
