Alex Soros lashes out at radical climate group over ‘Palestine’ obsession: ‘We gave them money’

In a recent interview, Alex Soros, the son of billionaire George Soros and chair of the Open Society Foundations, expressed frustration with the leftist environmentalist group, Sunrise Movement, which is heavily funded by Soros-backed organizations. Soros criticized the group for focusing too much on Palestine, rather than their intended mission of ending the era of fossil fuel elites.

Sunrise Movement, which received significant funding from Soros-backed entities during the 2020 election season, found itself embroiled in controversy when its Washington, D.C. chapter posted an antisemitic statement vowing to boycott events co-sponsored by “Zionist” Jewish groups. The statement labeled Israel as a “colonial project” and called for the exclusion of Jewish organizations from coalition spaces.

The antisemitic statement received widespread condemnation, with many calling out Sunrise Movement for pushing Jewish people out of their movement and associating them with the actions of Israel. Despite issuing an apology for singling out specific Jewish organizations, Sunrise Movement doubled down on its stance against Zionism, further fueling accusations of antisemitism.

In a recent Instagram post, Sunrise Movement continued its anti-Israel rhetoric, linking climate justice with freedom for Palestinians and accusing Israel of contributing to climate change through its treatment of Palestinians. This rhetoric has raised concerns among Democrats and left-wing leaders, who have historically defended George Soros against antisemitic attacks.

Critics, including Israel’s minister of diaspora affairs and social equality, Amichai Chikli, have pointed out the Soros family’s funding of progressive anti-Israel groups and expressed doubts about Alex Soros’ commitment to supporting Israel. Chikli noted that the Soros foundation provides funding to radical Palestinian organizations that denounce Israel as a colonial state.

As questions about the Soros family’s stance on Israel continue to circulate, it remains to be seen whether Alex Soros will continue to fund anti-Israel entities that criticize the Jewish state. The Open Society Foundations and the Sunrise Movement did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

Overall, Alex Soros’ criticism of Sunrise Movement’s focus on Palestine highlights the complexities of navigating issues related to Israel and antisemitism within progressive movements. As the debate continues, it is essential to address these concerns while upholding principles of inclusivity and respect for all communities.
