Alexa McDonough’s family helps NDP campaign in Halifax

Abbie McDonough shared with the media her fond memories of accompanying her late grandmother, former NDP leader Alexa McDonough, on door-knocking campaigns when she was young. Now 23 years old, Abbie has found a way to connect with her grandmother’s legacy by volunteering with her father, Justin, to assist with phone campaigns in the recent spring election in Halifax.
Reflecting on her grandmother’s impactful career, Abbie mentioned how discussions about the history of the NDP in Nova Scotia often lead to her proudly mentioning her grandmother and former MP Megan Leslie. She expressed joy in seeing her grandmother’s legacy live on, emphasizing its significance.
Alexa McDonough, who led the federal New Democrats from 1995 to 2003 and served as the MP for Halifax from 1997 to 2008, was a trailblazer in Canadian politics. Before her federal tenure, she became the first woman to lead the provincial NDP in Nova Scotia in 1980. When she won her provincial seat in Halifax in 1981, she was the sole woman and NDP member in the legislature. Sadly, Alexa passed away in 2022 after battling Alzheimer’s disease.
Following in Alexa’s footsteps, former Nova Scotia MLA Lisa Roberts is striving to reclaim the Halifax seat for the New Democrats in this year’s election. Abbie and Justin McDonough visited Roberts’ campaign office during NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s visit to show their support.
Describing Roberts as a role model, Abbie commended her strength. Justin emphasized the importance of having an NDP presence in Parliament, echoing his mother’s dedication to progressive values.
When asked about his mother’s view on the current political climate in Canada, Justin expressed disappointment, citing a lack of decorum and increasing negativity. He stressed the need for unity and collaboration among politicians and the public to address societal challenges effectively.
Abbie, who bears a striking resemblance to her grandmother, highlighted the importance of positivity in politics and expressed interest in potentially pursuing a political career in the future. Justin drew inspiration from his mother’s resilience in navigating political obstacles, encouraging today’s New Democrats to persevere despite challenges.
As the campaign unfolds, Justin remains optimistic about the NDP’s prospects in Halifax, emphasizing the importance of resilience and perseverance in achieving political goals. He praised Jagmeet Singh’s leadership amidst challenging circumstances, underscoring the enduring legacy of his mother’s leadership in guiding the party through adversity.
