‘America is back’: Lawmakers give their reactions to President Trump’s joint address to Congress

Republican lawmakers in Washington D.C. are hailing President Donald Trump’s joint speech to Congress as a sign that “America is back,” while Democrats are calling the address “bizarre.” The president delivered a speech that received frequent standing ovations from GOP members and interruptions from Democrats.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., praised President Trump for outlining his accomplishments in just 6 weeks and laying out a plan to get the country back on track. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, described the speech as “fantastic,” while Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, called it “outstanding.” However, Democratic Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., labeled the speech as “bizarre.”

Following the speech, Republican lawmakers criticized their Democratic colleagues for not standing for the president’s guests, including 13-year-old cancer survivor DJ Daniel. Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., expressed disappointment that Democrats did not show support for the guests honored during the address.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., accused Democrats of embarrassing themselves by not standing for DJ, who survived cancer. He declared that “America is back” and criticized the Democrats for their lack of support.

In contrast, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., had little to say about the speech, simply stating, “Not much.” Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, commended President Trump for his speech and emphasized that America is back under his leadership.

Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., praised President Trump’s confidence and communication skills, noting that he effectively communicated his goals to the American people. Collins highlighted the president’s accomplishments since taking office and reiterated his commitment to the promises he made during his campaign.

Despite the positive reception from Republican lawmakers, Democratic Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., criticized President Trump for focusing on topics like retaking the Panama Canal and Greenland’s status rather than addressing issues that affect everyday Americans.

During the speech, Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, interrupted President Trump, leading to Green’s removal from the chamber by the sergeant at arms at the order of Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.

Overall, Republican lawmakers praised President Trump’s joint speech to Congress as a demonstration of his leadership and commitment to fulfilling his promises. Democrats, on the other hand, expressed concerns about the content of the speech and its focus on certain geopolitical issues. The divide between the two parties was evident throughout the address, with differing reactions to the president’s remarks.
