America’s smallest EV truck prototype has arrived

California-based EV startup Telo Trucks has recently unveiled the preproduction prototype of its MT1 electric mini-truck, marking a significant milestone towards production. The event, held in Los Angeles, allowed attendees to get a closer look at the MT1, a vehicle that combines the functionality of a full-size truck with the compact size of a Mini Cooper SE. This innovative design challenges the current trend of oversized vehicles in the U.S. market by providing a practical and efficient alternative for urban and outdoor enthusiasts.
The MT1 is designed to offer the utility of a Toyota Tacoma in a vehicle that is only 152 inches long, similar in size to a Mini Cooper SE. Despite its small footprint, the MT1 can comfortably seat five adults and features a 60-inch truck bed. The truck’s unique folding midgate allows it to carry items as large as an 8-foot surfboard or 4-by-8 plywood sheets, making it versatile for both city errands and weekend adventures.
Telo offers two configurations for the MT1. The base model comes equipped with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive system producing 300 horsepower and an estimated range of 260 miles. For those seeking more power and range, the upgraded model features a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system with 500 horsepower, extending the range to 350 miles. This version can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around four seconds. Both models support fast-charging, allowing for a 20%-80% recharge in just 20 minutes. Optional solar panels on the cab roof, tonneau cover, or camper shell can provide up to 15 miles of additional range per day.
The MT1 boasts several innovative features, including its flexible configurations that allow the midgate to extend the truck bed into the cab or accommodate seating for up to eight passengers. The interior of the MT1 utilizes sustainable materials such as biodegradable cork and other eco-friendly materials for a clean and minimalist aesthetic. Advanced safety features, including cutting-edge sensors and structural technology, aim to make the MT1 one of the safest vehicles in its class.
With a starting price of $41,520 for the base model, Telo has already secured over 5,000 preorders, totaling more than $250 million in customer commitments. While full-scale production is still a couple of years away, Telo is actively testing its prototypes for safety and durability in preparation for homologation inspections next winter. The prototypes will be hand-built by the renowned California-based manufacturer Aria Group, a key player in the development of concept vehicles and rapid prototyping for leading automotive companies worldwide.
The Telo MT1 presents a compelling concept that challenges the status quo of oversized trucks with its compact size and impressive capabilities. While the progress made by Telo is promising, there are still challenges to overcome, particularly in terms of production and affordability. Ultimately, the MT1 has the potential to carve out a niche in the EV market, but it remains to be seen if Telo can deliver on its promises. Would you consider downsizing to an MT1 mini-truck?
