Angel Reese gets compared to ‘Little Rock Nine’

Former NBA player Etan Thomas recently compared Chicago Sky star Angel Reese to a member of the “Little Rock Nine” after she allegedly faced “hateful comments” during a game against the Indiana Fever. Thomas took to social media to post a photo of Reese superimposed onto the iconic black and white image known as the “Scream Image,” which depicted 15-year-old Elizabeth Eckford being yelled at on her way to school in 1957.

The incident occurred during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, where Reese reportedly endured racial slurs from fans. The WNBA has launched an investigation into the matter, with the league issuing a statement condemning racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms.

The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) also released a statement in support of the investigation, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable in the sport. Under the WNBA’s ‘No Space for Hate’ policy, both the league and the players’ union are committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all athletes.

Despite the controversy, Reese and her opponent Caitlin Clark maintained that their on-court exchange was simply a part of the game and not driven by any personal animosity. Reese’s performance on the court has garnered attention, with her confidence and skill earning her a spot as one of the most talked-about players in the WNBA.

In her rookie year with the Sky, Reese finished second in WNBA Rookie of the Year voting, received a WNBA MVP vote, and averaged a double-double throughout the season. Her success on the court has solidified her position as a rising star in the league.

As the investigation into the incident continues, both the WNBA and the WNBPA are dedicated to upholding the values of inclusivity and respect within the sport. The swift response to the alleged incident highlights the commitment of both organizations to creating a positive and supportive environment for all players.
