Angie Craig joins Dem primary to replace Sen Tina Smith

Rep. Angie Craig, a Democrat from Minnesota, has announced her candidacy for the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Tina Smith, who will not seek re-election. This move leaves a significant gap in Minnesota’s second congressional district, a highly contested area that Republicans are eyeing as an opportunity to flip.
The National Republican Congressional Committee wasted no time in criticizing Craig’s decision, with spokesman Zach Bannon stating, “Out of touch Democrat Angie Craig just announced she’s running for Senate, and MN-02 is now an extremely competitive open seat. With this district wide open – and many House Democrats racing for the exits for a promotion – national Democrats are in deep trouble. The writing is on the wall for House Democrats, and their vulnerable members like Angie Craig are racing for the exits. Republicans look forward to flipping this open seat red.”
In her announcement video, Craig takes aim at President Donald Trump, accusing him of “trampling our rights and freedoms as he profits.” She also calls out Elon Musk, labeling him as an “out-of-control, unelected billionaire” who is trying to take over the government.
Furthermore, Craig criticizes Republicans in Congress for being “cowardly” and allowing chaos and corruption to thrive in Washington. She emphasizes the values of independence, freedom, and community in Minnesota and expresses her commitment to fighting for what is right.
Recent polls have shown a decline in support for Democrats, particularly among young Americans, a demographic that the party has traditionally held with ease. A poll from the Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics revealed that approval of congressional Democrats among young Americans has dropped to 23%, down from 42% in early 2017. Approval for congressional Republicans has slightly improved to 29%, while President Trump’s approval rating among 18-29-year-olds remains at 31%.
As Craig enters a heated Democratic primary to succeed Sen. Tina Smith, the race for Minnesota’s Senate seat promises to be closely watched. With the political landscape evolving rapidly, the outcome of this election could have far-reaching implications for both parties.
