Another basketball dynasty is budding at Carleton — this time, it’s the women’s team

Carleton University in Ottawa has long been recognized as a powerhouse in basketball, particularly on the men’s side under the leadership of head coach Dave Smart. With an impressive 17 titles in a 20-year span, the Carleton Ravens have set a standard that is unmatched by any other Canadian or U.S. college or university team.

In 2020, Dani Sinclair took on the role of head coach for the women’s program, leaving her alma mater Victoria to embrace the challenge. Despite the pressure that comes with following in the footsteps of a legendary coach like Smart, Sinclair has led the women’s team to back-to-back national titles and an undefeated 22-0 start to the current season.

As the Ravens gear up for this year’s Canada-wide championships at UBC, the team is focused on building a new dynasty that mirrors the success of the men’s program. Sinclair acknowledges the pressure but embraces it, recognizing the level of resources and support available at Carleton.

Third-year forward Jacqueline Urban, who has never experienced a U Sports career without a national championship, speaks to the lingering influence of Smart’s legacy on the program. Sinclair often references Smart and the championship banners that hang in the gym, emphasizing the high standards set by the men’s team.

Urban credits Sinclair for her interpersonal skills and ability to connect with players on and off the court. The team has seen a shift in leadership following the departure of star player Kali Pocrnic, with Urban stepping into a more prominent role.

While the pandemic disrupted the season and cancelled games, it provided Sinclair with an opportunity to introduce her coaching style and build relationships with the team. The formula for success at Carleton is rooted in hard work and dedication, something Sinclair emphasizes to her players.

As the Ravens continue their pursuit of a third consecutive national title, Sinclair remains focused on taking each game as it comes. The team’s culture and chemistry have been integral to their success, with players immersing themselves in the Carleton way of doing things.

Despite the challenges of maintaining a perfect record and facing opponents who bring their best against them, Urban and Sinclair are motivated by the opportunity to continue the program’s success. With the end of the season in sight, the team is driven to carry on the legacy of excellence at Carleton University.
