For the longest time, the solution to any accidents involving water and an iPhone was to put the device in rice.

Well, even if that’s worked for you in the past, Apple is now advising iPhone users to forget about it.

The popular hack was once believed to be a trusty remedy for phones that had been in water for a short amount of time.

But Apple has said it could permanently damage the device, Metro reported.

“Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice,” Apple warned, according to the U.K. publication.

“Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone.”

Apple reportedly also advised users not to dry their iPhones using compressed air or an external heat source.

Also, “don’t insert a foreign object, such as a cotton swab or a paper towel, into the connector.”

Now, if your iPhone somehow becomes submerged, briefly or otherwise, a new feature sends an alert warning you that your phone is wet, and you should wait to charge it, the publication reported.

In the event of a mishap, Apple recommends gently tapping your iPhone against your hand to knock out excess water, ensuring the connector is facing down, according to Metro.

After that, leave your iPhone in a dry area with decent airflow, wait half an hour — the longest 30 minutes of your life — and repeat the process.

If the alert re-appears, leave your iPhone in a dry area for up to a day to help dry it out.
