Applications open for Canada’s new disability benefit program

Canada’s New Disability Benefit Program Now Accepting Applications
Canada’s new disability benefit program, which provides eligible individuals with up to $200 a month, is now open for applications. This initiative is aimed at assisting people with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 64 who have already been approved for the disability tax credit. According to the government, payments are scheduled to commence in July.
The primary objective of this program is to supplement existing provincial and territorial programs. Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu has confirmed that all provinces and territories, with the exception of Alberta, have committed not to reduce their own benefits in light of this new federal initiative.
This benefit was introduced as part of the Trudeau Liberal government’s pledge to help alleviate poverty among individuals with disabilities. However, despite this intention, many advocates for people with disabilities have criticized the benefit, arguing that it will have little impact on addressing poverty effectively.
In response to these concerns, Minister Hajdu, who now oversees disability-related matters, acknowledged the criticisms surrounding the benefit. She stated, “I don’t believe that the disability benefit alone is sufficient for individuals to sustain themselves. It was not designed with that specific purpose in mind. However, it does provide individuals with disabilities greater autonomy, as it can be used to supplement their existing earnings or income.”
As part of the program, the government is also providing funding to community organizations to support individuals who may require assistance in applying for the disability tax credit or the benefit program.
