Ashley Hinson announces bid for Iowa Senate seat after Ernst retirement

Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the U.S. Senate seat in Iowa, aiming to succeed the retiring GOP Sen. Joni Ernst. Hinson, a former TV news anchor currently serving her third term representing Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, made the announcement on a popular afternoon talk radio show in Iowa.
During her radio appearance, Hinson emphasized her support for President Donald Trump, stating, “I’m running to be President Trump’s top ally in the United States Senate. I’m proud to fight alongside him.” Her decision to run came shortly after Ernst announced in a social media video that she would not seek re-election in the upcoming midterms.
Ernst, a retired Army Reserve and Iowa National Guard officer who served in the Iraq War, reflected on her time in the Senate, highlighting her efforts to cut waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government. She first gained national attention with her “make ’em squeal” campaign ads during her successful Senate bid in 2014.
In response to Ernst’s decision, Hinson thanked her for her service and friendship, acknowledging her contributions to the state and nation. Hinson outlined her priorities for the Senate race, including securing borders, supporting Iowa agriculture, and advocating for working families.
As she enters the race, Hinson has garnered endorsements from Republican Sens. Jim Banks, Katie Britt, and Markwayne Mullin. Iowa, once a battleground state, has shifted to the right in recent years, with Republicans currently holding both Senate seats and all congressional districts in the state.
Despite the Republican stronghold in Iowa, Democrats are energized after flipping two GOP-held state Senate seats in special elections this year. Four Democrats have already announced their candidacy for the Senate seat, with the party aiming to expand the senatorial map.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) expressed confidence in securing a Republican victory in Iowa and continuing to champion President Trump’s agenda. The GOP is looking to defend and expand its Senate majority in the upcoming elections, targeting key states like Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Minnesota.
Overall, the 2026 Senate race promises to be a highly contested battle, with both parties vying for control of the chamber. As the political landscape continues to evolve, candidates like Ashley Hinson will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Iowa and the nation.
