Asked to clarify if he sees genocide in Gaza, Carney says he ‘didn’t hear that word’

Liberal Leader Mark Carney recently addressed a remark he made regarding the situation in Gaza, clarifying that he did not hear the word “genocide” during a rally in Calgary. At the event, a member of the crowd shouted about a genocide in Palestine, to which Carney responded by mentioning Canada’s arms embargo on the region.
In a subsequent campaign stop in Calgary, Carney explained that due to the noise at the rally, he only caught snippets of what was being said. He emphasized that Canada has restrictions on arms exports to Israel, with the exception of the Iron Dome defense system. Carney highlighted the fact that Canada halted new military export permits to Israel in January 2024 in response to ongoing conflicts in the region.
The military operation in Gaza, initiated by Israel in response to Hamas-led attacks, has led to significant casualties on both sides. Israel has faced criticism for its actions, with accusations of disproportionate force and civilian casualties. The Canadian government, recognizing Hamas as a terrorist organization, has faced pressure to cease arms exports to Israel.
In response to these concerns, the Liberal government took steps to address the issue. In March, a motion was passed to halt arms exports to Israel, ensuring compliance with Canada’s arms export regulations. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly suspended existing permits for Canadian companies sending military equipment to Israel, demonstrating a commitment to upholding human rights and international law.
The situation in Gaza remains complex and contentious, with ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian crisis and promote peace in the region. Carney’s clarification on the issue reflects the government’s commitment to responsible arms exports and upholding human rights standards in international relations.
