At least 15 dead, including 3 children, in major Russian attack on Kyiv, Ukraine says
In a devastating attack on the Ukrainian capital, Russia bombarded Kyiv with drones and missiles, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people and injuries to 48 others. This marked the first major Russian assault on Kyiv in weeks, as efforts to bring about peace in the region have struggled to make progress. The attack involved 598 strike drones, decoys, and 31 missiles, making it one of the largest air offensives in the ongoing conflict.
Among the victims were three children, aged two, 14, and 17, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s city administration. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue to search for survivors trapped under the rubble. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating that Russia has chosen violence over peaceful negotiations.
The attack also targeted civilian infrastructure, including a shopping mall in the city center and several buildings in central Kyiv. The European Union delegation building and the British Council building were also damaged. The Ukrainian Air Force successfully shot down and neutralized many of the drones and missiles launched by Russia.
The aftermath of the attack saw emergency responders working tirelessly to rescue survivors and retrieve bodies from the rubble. Residents of the affected areas expressed fear and frustration over the ongoing conflict, with many calling for a swift end to the violence. Ukrainian railway infrastructure was also damaged, causing disruptions and delays in the region.
Diplomatic efforts to bring about peace have stalled, with Western leaders accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of dragging his feet on negotiations. Ukrainian military officials confirmed that Russian forces have advanced into an eighth region of Ukraine, further escalating the conflict. President Zelenskyy has called for harsher sanctions on Russia to pressure Putin into ending the war.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate, the international community must come together to support efforts for peace and stability in the region. The tragic events in Kyiv serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
