Atlantic Liberal caucus calls for Trudeau to step down as leader

The Atlantic Liberal caucus has made a bold move by calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down as the leader of the Liberal Party. This decision was made following a meeting held on December 23, where caucus chair Kody Blois penned a letter to Trudeau expressing the need for his resignation. The letter was later shared on social media by New Brunswick Liberal MP Wayne Long.

In the letter, Blois emphasized the importance of a leadership change in order to ensure the progress made by the Liberal team is not lost under a potential government led by Pierre Poilievre. The caucus members expressed their personal affection for Trudeau but also voiced their concerns about the looming threats, including Donald Trump’s proposed 25 per cent tariff on Canadian exports to the U.S. and the possibility of a vote of non-confidence supported by all three main opposition parties in the new year.

In addition to calling for Trudeau’s resignation, Blois also reached out to national caucus chair Brenda Shanahan to request an urgent meeting in early January to discuss the next steps. This includes deliberating on whether the caucus should choose an interim party leader.

CBC News attempted to reach out to MPs Wayne Long and Kody Blois for further comments but did not receive an immediate response. Prior to the Atlantic caucus meeting, the Ontario Liberal caucus also convened and reportedly arrived at the same conclusion that Trudeau should step down.

The decision by the Atlantic Liberal caucus and the Ontario Liberal caucus to call for Trudeau’s resignation highlights the growing discontent within the party. It remains to be seen how Trudeau will respond to these calls for his resignation and what implications this may have for the future of the Liberal Party. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
