Audio released of moment Idaho firefighters ambushed responding to blaze: ‘We have an emergency situation’

Firefighters responding to a blaze in Kootenai County, Idaho, were tragically ambushed by a sniper on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of two firefighters and the injury of another. The harrowing audio from the scene captured the moment a call for help was made, revealing the chaos and danger faced by the first responders.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office reported that the fire crews had initially responded to a fire at Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d’Alene, around 1:30 p.m. Gunshots were heard approximately half an hour later, signaling the start of the ambush.

In the audio recording, a firefighter urgently called for law enforcement assistance, describing an “emergency situation” with an “active shooter at a fire.” The caller mentioned that two battalion chiefs were down and that multiple gunshots had been fired. The firefighter also expressed the belief that the fire had been intentionally set to lure them into the dangerous situation.

Sheriff Robert Norris confirmed at a press conference that two firefighters had been killed in the ambush, while another was critically wounded but in stable condition after undergoing surgery. Authorities were able to locate the body of the suspected sniper by tracking cell phone signals, leading to the lifting of the shelter-in-place order that had been in effect.

Due to the ongoing threat posed by the sniper and the continuing fire, fire crews had to retreat from the area for their safety. The situation remained tense as law enforcement worked to secure the scene and ensure the safety of all involved.

Idaho Governor Brad Little expressed his shock and sadness at the attack, calling it a “heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters.” He urged Idahoans to pray for the injured firefighters and their families as more information about the incident emerged. The FBI also responded to the scene with technical and tactical support to aid in the investigation.
