Australian blood donor who saved millions of babies thanks to rare antibody dies at age 88

James Harrison, known as “the man with the golden arm,” passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness and compassion. According to the Australian Red Cross, Harrison was the world’s most prolific blood and plasma donor, having donated his precious plasma 1,173 times. His plasma contained the rare antibody Anti-D, also known as the Rhesus D antibody, which is crucial in preventing hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). This condition occurs when a mother’s blood is at risk of attacking her fetus due to an incompatibility in blood types.
Harrison’s journey as a blood donor began after he received several transfusions following lung surgery as a teenager. Doctors soon discovered that his plasma was unique and contained the life-saving Anti-D antibody. Over the years, Harrison’s donations are credited with saving the lives of 2.4 million Australian babies.
In 2018, Harrison made his final donation after donating blood every two weeks for 64 years. He described it as a “heart-wrenching” experience, reflecting on the countless lives he had touched through his contributions. Harrison’s daughter, Tracey Mellowship, who herself is an Anti-D recipient, expressed gratitude for her father’s unwavering dedication to helping others.
Despite his fear of needles, Harrison continued to donate blood, knowing the profound impact it had on those in need. His legacy lives on through the 200 Anti-D donors in Australia who continue to save the lives of approximately 45,000 babies each year.
In his last years, Harrison took pride in becoming a great-grandfather and cherished the family he had helped create through his donations. His humanitarian spirit and sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him, leaving a lasting impression of kindness and generosity.
James Harrison’s life serves as a reminder of the power of selfless acts and the profound impact one individual can have on the world. His legacy will continue to inspire others to give back and make a difference in the lives of those in need.
