The Devoe-Gale family from Codroy Valley, N.L., is overjoyed to be safely on land with their newborn daughter, Miley, after a remarkable and unexpected experience at sea. Mason Devoe and Lindsey Gale embarked on a journey from Newfoundland to Cape Breton aboard Marine Atlantic’s Ala’suinu ferry. Lindsey, who was 33 weeks pregnant at the time, decided to accompany Mason on his trip to the mainland for one final adventure before their baby arrived.
The trip started off smoothly, with calm waters and a peaceful atmosphere until the early hours of the morning when Lindsey began experiencing what she thought were Braxton Hicks contractions. Concerned, she reached out to their friend Sherry Scott, who works on the ferry as the chief storekeeper. Sherry, along with her husband and son, assisted Lindsey in tracking her contractions and realizing they were becoming more consistent.
As the situation progressed, the crew onboard the ferry sprang into action, contacting the captain and increasing the vessel’s speed to reach land before baby Miley made her entrance. Despite their best efforts, the situation was overwhelming for Mason and Lindsey, who were unsure of what to expect. The crew contacted 911 for assistance, and paramedics were waiting at the port to help upon the ferry’s early arrival.
Baby Miley was born on November 1 aboard the Ala’suinu ferry, with paramedics assisting in the delivery just minutes after boarding. Despite the unconventional birth location, the family is grateful for the support and care they received during this unexpected journey.
