‘Back to our roots’: Female GOP lawmakers work to win back feminism from the left

Female Republicans in Congress are on a mission to reclaim the title of the party of women from Democrats. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis of New York expressed her frustration with the narrative that Democrats have hijacked, stating, “I don’t know why we ever allowed the Democrats to claim to be the party of women. That’s bull.”

Other GOP lawmakers agree that the cost of living is a crucial women’s issue and have been focusing on policies that address the needs and concerns of women. Since the last election, Republicans have passed several bills that center on women, such as legislation on transgender youth and border security.

Rep. Ashley Hinson of Iowa emphasized the importance of advocating for women and girls in various spaces, including professional environments, bathrooms, and sports. She highlighted the recent bill aimed at keeping biological male student athletes out of girls’ sports teams and locker rooms as a step towards protecting women’s rights.

Historically, Republicans have played a significant role in advancing women’s rights, including leading the passage of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote. President Donald Trump also authorized the construction of a Smithsonian Women’s History Museum in 2020, a project that Democratic President Joe Biden did not prioritize.

Despite women traditionally favoring Democrats in elections, Republican women like Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina are pushing back against this trend. Mace declared, “MAGA is the new feminist,” indicating a shift in the perception of conservative values among women.

Freshman Rep. Julie Fedorchak of North Dakota, who was the highest vote-getter in her state, emphasized the importance of competency and readiness in elected officials. She believes that women’s issues encompass a range of topics, from the cost of living to supporting parents and managing multiple roles.
