Sask. Party MLA who called Jagmeet Singh a ‘terrorist’ stripped of additional MLA duties

Racquel Hilbert Removed from Additional MLA Duties After Calling Jagmeet Singh a Terrorist

Racquel Hilbert, the Saskatchewan Party MLA who sparked controversy by calling federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh a terrorist in the provincial legislature last month, has faced consequences for her actions. Premier Scott Moe condemned her comments as inaccurate and highly inappropriate, leading to her removal from additional MLA duties.

In a news release issued by the Saskatchewan Party, it was announced that Hilbert would no longer hold roles on the Treasury Board, the Wanuskewin board of directors, or as deputy caucus chair. Despite these changes, she remains an MLA and a member of the Saskatchewan Party caucus.

During a debate on the provincial budget on March 25, Hilbert criticized the Opposition Saskatchewan NDP before turning her attention to Jagmeet Singh. She questioned his support for the government of former prime minister Justin Trudeau and made the controversial statement linking him to terrorism in India.

While it remains unclear what prompted Hilbert’s remarks, Singh had previously criticized the Indian government following Trudeau’s accusations regarding the killing of a Canadian Sikh man.

In a statement released following the backlash, Hilbert acknowledged her error and apologized for her comments. Singh responded by expressing concern over the impact of such statements on children and questioning the motives behind the MLA’s words.

The World Sikh Organization joined calls for accountability, urging the Saskatchewan Party to strip Hilbert of her duties and provide anti-racism training for all members. They emphasized the need for consequences for her “hateful remarks” and a commitment to promoting cultural sensitivity within the party.
