Baltimore sues Trump for ditching DEI: ‘Attacks anyone who dares to celebrate diversity’

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, in collaboration with progressive groups, has taken legal action against President Donald Trump’s executive orders that aim to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The lawsuit, filed in Maryland federal court, includes plaintiffs such as the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education, American Association of University Professors, and Restaurant Opportunities Centers United.
Mayor Scott expressed concerns that Trump’s orders not only target DEI programs but also threaten anyone who celebrates diversity. The city council is also listed as a plaintiff in the lawsuit. Baltimore, with a population that is 60% Black, 27% White, 8% Hispanic, and 2% Asian, stands to lose vital federal funding due to the executive order.
Trump’s directive seeks to eliminate roles within the bureaucracy that focus on diversity and equity initiatives. Paulette Granberry Russell, CEO of the diversity officers’ association, warned that these orders will hinder progress and opportunity in higher education. Similarly, the restaurant industry group emphasized the importance of diversity in the workforce and vowed to resist Trump’s attempts to eradicate DEI programs.
The White House spokesperson refuted Baltimore’s claims, stating that the administration’s focus on economic opportunity and national security has garnered support from minority communities. The lawsuit, citing the Supreme Court case West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnett, argues that Trump’s orders infringe on constitutional rights by censoring values and punishing those who speak out against historical injustices.
The legal filing, supported by Democracy Forward, a nonprofit organization, alleges that Trump’s anti-DEI orders violate the protections enshrined in the Constitution. Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward, stated that the coalition behind the lawsuit represents individuals from diverse backgrounds who are all affected by these unlawful directives.
Overall, the lawsuit aims to challenge Trump’s executive orders that undermine diversity and inclusion efforts across various sectors. By standing up against these discriminatory policies, Baltimore and its allies seek to protect the rights and values that promote equality and opportunity for all Americans.
