Ban Chinese AI app DeepSeek from ‘government devices,’ state AGs urge Congress

State attorneys general are joining the chorus of voices calling for a ban on the Chinese-owned DeepSeek AI app on all government devices, citing national security concerns. The letter, signed by 21 attorneys general and sent to House and Senate leaders, describes China as a “clear and present danger” to the U.S. The AGs believe that DeepSeek could be used as a tool for Chinese spies to compromise America’s national security by collecting user data and transmitting it to the Chinese Communist Party.

Montana AG Austin Knudsen, who drafted the letter, emphasized the need for Congress to take action, stating that “China is trying to steal America’s secrets” and urging the passage of the No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act. This call for a ban on DeepSeek comes in the wake of concerns about Beijing’s history of intellectual property theft and espionage targeting U.S. officials and citizens.

DeepSeek, an AI-powered search and data analysis platform based in China, owned by High-Flyer, has raised red flags in the U.S. market due to its potential security risks. The app’s capabilities, including the collection of chat history, keystrokes, and IP addresses, have led several countries and states to ban it on government devices. The AGs point to the precedent set by the ban on TikTok and urge Congress to take similar action with DeepSeek.

The letter, signed by AGs from 20 states, underscores the urgency of addressing the threat posed by DeepSeek and calls on the Trump Administration to implement a ban if Congress does not act swiftly. Concerns about Chinese spying capabilities and the transmission of sensitive data to foreign entities have prompted lawmakers to take action to safeguard national security.
