Belgian runner does marathon a day, nears world record
GHENT, Belgium – Belgian Ultra Runner Sets World Record for Daily Marathons
On the final day of 2024, Belgian ultra runner Hilde Dosogne achieved a remarkable feat by completing a marathon every single day of the year. Despite the physical and mental challenges she faced, Dosogne crossed the finish line on New Year’s Eve, solidifying her place in the record books as the first woman to accomplish this incredible milestone.
Dosogne’s journey was not only a personal challenge but also a way to raise funds for breast cancer research. Through her relentless pursuit of running at least 15,444 kilometers in a single year, she managed to collect 60,000 euros (US$62,438) for a worthy cause.
Now, Dosogne must submit her GPS data, photos, videos, and witness reports to the Guinness World Records organization for verification. If approved, she will officially hold the record for running a marathon every day for an entire year.
Dosogne’s achievement puts her in a league of her own in the female category, surpassing the previous record of 150 days set by Erchana Murray-Bartlett of Australia. Her dedication and perseverance in the face of flu, COVID-19, injuries, and crashes exemplify the mental fortitude required to undertake such a daunting challenge.
Running primarily on a flat loop near Ghent, Dosogne battled harsh weather conditions and physical setbacks to stay on track. She maintained a steady pace of 10 km/h (6.2 m.p.h.) to ensure she could complete each marathon safely and within the required distance for Guinness World Records validation.
Despite facing obstacles along the way, Dosogne’s determination never wavered. With the support of friends, family, and fellow runners, she pushed through the toughest moments and emerged victorious on the final day of her extraordinary journey.
Dosogne’s record-breaking achievement is a testament to the power of perseverance and the human spirit. Her story serves as inspiration for all who dare to dream big and defy the odds to achieve their goals.
