Berkeley launches a lightweight open-source humanoid robot

Building an open-source humanoid robot has historically been a challenge due to high costs and complex proprietary systems. However, a new project from UC Berkeley is changing the game with the introduction of the Berkeley Humanoid Light (BHL). This lightweight robot can be built using 3D-printed parts and off-the-shelf components, making it accessible to students, hobbyists, and small research teams.
The BHL project was born out of a desire to make robotics more affordable, customizable, and accessible to all. The robot can be constructed for less than $5,000, a fraction of the cost of most commercial humanoid robots. It stands at 39 inches tall and weighs just over 35 pounds, making it a manageable size for experimentation and learning.
One of the key features of the BHL is its modular design, which allows builders to start small and gradually work their way up to assembling the full humanoid. The robot is powered by modular actuators with 3D-printed cycloidal gearboxes, ensuring durability and performance comparable to high-end commercial robots.
The open-source nature of the BHL project extends to all aspects of the robot, from hardware design to control software. A custom teleoperation system using SteamVR makes it easy to control the robot, while a growing community on Discord and GitHub is sharing tips, upgrades, and full robot builds. This collaborative approach is essential in making robotics more accessible and accelerating learning for everyone involved.
The Berkeley Humanoid Light is a prime example of how accessible robot design can lead to innovation without sacrificing quality. By leveraging smart engineering, affordable parts, and a commitment to openness, the BHL team is paving the way for a new era of humanoid robotics. Whether you’re a student, a maker, or simply curious about robotics, the BHL project offers a glimpse into the endless possibilities of technology for all.
Do you believe that open-source and affordable humanoid robots like the BHL will democratize robotics innovation, or do you think high costs and complexity will continue to be barriers for most people? Share your thoughts with us at CyberGuy.com/Contact.
