Senator Bernie Sanders issued a stark warning during a recent town hall event with mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani at Brooklyn College, highlighting the fight for the Democratic Party’s future in New York.

Sanders, an independent from Vermont, criticized top New York Democratic leaders, including Governor Kathy Hochul, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, for not endorsing Mamdani in the competitive race for Gracie Mansion.

“It’s puzzling to me why the key Democratic figures in New York State are not backing their own party’s candidate,” Sanders expressed.

The senator emphasized the significant grassroots support Mamdani has garnered, with over 50,000 volunteers and a surge in engagement from young and nontraditional voters. Despite this, the lack of support from Democratic leaders has left Sanders questioning the party’s direction.

Mamdani, a Brooklyn native, used the town hall as a platform to urge New York Democrats to unite behind their nominee as he faces opposition from independent and Republican contenders in the mayoral race.

When asked about Sanders’ remarks, Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of letting the voters decide without external influences, highlighting the need for collaboration to address community needs.

While Schumer and Jeffries did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Sanders continued to rally support for Mamdani, even amidst protests and criticism.

Despite opposition, Sanders and Mamdani’s progressive agenda has gained traction, with high-profile endorsements and a renewed sense of direction for the Democratic base in New York.

Their focus on issues like rent freezes, public transportation improvements, and raising the minimum wage through corporate taxation has resonated with voters seeking a more progressive approach.
