Biden pardons late Black activist Marcus Garvey, 4 others

On his last full day in office, President Biden issued five more pardons, including one for political activist and Black nationalist Marcus Garvey. In a statement, Biden emphasized that America is a country built on the promise of second chances and highlighted his commitment to using his clemency power to make that promise a reality. He stated that he has issued more individual pardons and commutations than any other President in U.S. history, aiming to provide opportunities for redemption and rehabilitation to those who have demonstrated remorse.

The recipients of the latest round of clemency include Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Ravidath “Ravi” Ragbir, Don Leonard Scott, Jr., and Kemba Smith Pradia. Notably, the pardon for Marcus Garvey was granted posthumously in recognition of his contributions to improving his community. Garvey, known as “Africa’s Provisional President,” played a significant role in advocating for Black empowerment and Pan-African unity.

Accompanying the announcement of the pardons was a photo of Marcus Garvey during the renaming of a ship to the S.S. Booker T. Washington in 1925. The image captures Garvey’s influential presence as a leader and symbol of Black pride and liberation.
