Biden tells Charleston, SC church ‘I’m not going anywhere’ on last day in office

President Biden made a promise to remain active in public life after leaving the White House, declaring to a congregation at a South Carolina church, “I’m not going anywhere.” On his final day in office, Biden traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, where he delivered a speech at the Royal Missionary Baptist Church to commemorate Martin Luther King Day.

During his address, Biden highlighted his efforts in granting clemency, stating that he had issued more commutations and individual pardons than any other president in American history. He expressed his goal of ending the federal death penalty by commuting most sentences to life imprisonment without parole. Biden emphasized his decision to commute the sentences of individuals serving lengthy terms for nonviolent drug offenses, showing mercy to those who had shown remorse and rehabilitation.

In a historic move, Biden pardoned late Black activist Marcus Garvey and four others. The president asserted that these decisions were challenging but necessary to combine justice and mercy to witness and address the pain of individuals. He emphasized the importance of redemption and the ongoing struggle to improve the nation’s soul.

As he concluded his speech, Biden reassured the congregation that he remained as passionate about his work as he was when he entered politics at a young age. Despite turning 82 in November, Biden expressed his determination to continue his efforts and stay engaged in public service.

Following his speech in South Carolina, Biden must return to Washington, D.C., for the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Trump. After suspending his re-election campaign due to concerns about his age and mental fitness, Biden faced criticism within the Democratic Party. Vice President Kamala Harris ultimately led the Democratic ticket in the presidential election but suffered a defeat to Trump in November.

Biden, the oldest U.S. president at the time of his inauguration four years ago, will pass the record to Trump, who is 78 years old. Despite his age, Biden remains committed to serving the American people and making a positive impact on the nation.

In addition to his speech in South Carolina, Biden granted clemency to five individuals, including the pardon of Marcus Garvey. This act further demonstrated his dedication to justice and mercy in his final days in office.

As President Biden transitions out of the White House, his commitment to public service and his efforts to promote justice and redemption continue to resonate with the American people. His legacy as a leader who values compassion and progress will leave a lasting impact on the nation.
