Bill to end birthright citizenship ‘once and for all’ introduced amid Trump battle

Rep. Andy Barr, a Republican from Kentucky, is making a bold move to clarify the issue of birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants. In the midst of a legal battle between President Donald Trump and Democratic-led states, Barr is introducing a constitutional amendment aimed at putting an end to the debate once and for all.
The proposed amendment seeks to provide clarity on the 14th Amendment’s clause that individuals must be “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States in order to be citizens. The 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868 to grant citizenship rights to former slaves, states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”
Barr’s amendment would specify that a person born in the United States can only be considered “subject to the jurisdiction of the United States” if they are born to parents who are either U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, or aliens with lawful status performing active service in the armed forces.
This move comes at a time when the Supreme Court has delivered a significant victory for President Trump by limiting lower courts from issuing universal injunctions that have hindered his administration’s executive orders, including the order ending birthright citizenship. The court’s ruling allows injunctions only in limited instances, leaving the question of how it will affect the birthright citizenship order unanswered.
Barr’s amendment aims to address the issue head-on, regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision on the matter. In a statement, Barr expressed his support for the court’s decision to restrict injunctions but emphasized the urgency of ending birthright citizenship. He criticized “radical District Judges” for obstructing the Trump administration’s agenda and pledged to introduce the constitutional amendment promptly to resolve the issue definitively.
