Billions saved after DOGE eliminates more grants and contracts

The Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently terminated $2.5 billion in grants that were deemed “wasteful” by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). According to DOGE, the USDA eliminated 420 grants, resulting in a savings of $2.3 billion.

One of the programs that the funds were used for included $361,000 allocated for “gender non-conforming, non-binary, two-spirit” BIPOC farmers in New York. Additionally, $150,000 was spent on “gender-lensed curricula designed to be transdisciplinary in the food, agriculture, natural resources, and human sciences.” Even Ghana received $100,000 for “climate resilience and sustainable agriculture.”

In a move to cut down on unnecessary spending, federal agencies also terminated 179 contracts with a total value of $1.87 billion, resulting in savings of $280 million. Among these contracts, the federal government spent $207,000 on a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services consulting contract for a “grant writing workshop” and $89,000 on a Treasury Department contract for a “country program manager in Namibia.” Furthermore, a $1.8 million Trade & Development contract was utilized for “energy and climate advisory services.”

The efforts to eliminate wasteful spending are part of a broader initiative led by the Department of Government Efficiency to streamline government operations and ensure taxpayer dollars are being used effectively. By conducting thorough reviews of grants and contracts, the government aims to improve efficiency and accountability in its spending practices.

Elon Musk, a policy advisor for the Department of Government Efficiency, has been instrumental in identifying and eliminating wasteful spending since President Donald Trump took office. The DOGE’s efforts to slash unnecessary grants and contracts demonstrate a commitment to fiscal responsibility and effective governance.
