Her message? No young woman would be ashamed or only with pain that is too often rejected as “only part of being a woman.”

Irwin, daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, revealed her diagnosis for the first time in March 2023, through a position on social media. The story of the conservationist emphasizes a condition that affects millions worldwide. This is what to know.
What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis affects approximately 10 percent of women of reproductive age worldwide; In the US alone, this affects around 9 million women. The diagnosis is often delayed, on average five to 12 years after the start of the symptoms due to stigma and a wrong diagnosis, published according to research in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The World Health Organization defines endometriosis as a condition that occurs when tissue such as the womb outside the womb grows and causes pain, inflammation and even infertility.
Common symptoms are pelvic and abdominal pain, painful periods, pain during sexual intercourse, digestive problems, heavy bleeding and fatigue.

If the treatment does not help with the symptoms, the next step is often laparoscopic surgery, which uses minor incisions to remove or to ablot lesions.
This operation often means a faster recovery and fewer complications compared to more invasive open surgery, called a laparotomy, which means one long incision in the abdomen.

Recovery usually takes two to four weeks, although healing can take longer, depending on the size of the operation and individual health.
Although relatively rare, the risk of surgery, bleeding, damage to nearby organs and gas -related discomfort may include.
In addition to symptom lighting, procedures such as Irwin’s can maintain fertility by removing growth.

In May 2025, the Seckin Endometriosis Research Center was opened in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, supported by $ 20 million in financing. It represents the first major American facility that is exclusively devoted to understanding endometriosis, developing non-invasive diagnostics and improving treatments.
The story of Irwin sheds light on the difficult struggle that many women encounter when they try to find answers to their physical pain. Her post insists on wider, open conversations about the health of women on a global scale.
