In a breaking news development, senior Republican and Democratic representatives are joining forces to introduce a groundbreaking bill today that aims to prevent the recognition of the Georgian Dream government in the Black Sea nation. This government has been facing massive anti-government protests for over 40 days now.

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., who serves as the chairman of the Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., are set to unveil the “Georgian Nightmare Non-Recognition Act.” This bill, exclusively obtained by Fox News Digital, prohibits the recognition or normalization of relations with any government led by Bidzina Ivanishvili or any of his proxies due to ongoing crimes against the Georgian people.

According to the bill, no federal official or employee is allowed to take any action or allocate federal funds to recognize or imply recognition of Bidzina Ivanishvili or any Georgian government associated with him.

Rep. Cohen, who coined the name of the bill, expressed his concerns about the Georgian Dream government, stating that it has transformed into a nightmare under sanctioned oligarch Ivanishvili’s influence. He emphasized the importance of free and fair elections in Georgia and stressed that the U.S. must not recognize the current illegitimate government.

The Georgian Dream party responded to the proposed legislation by denouncing the sanctions as anti-Georgian and accusing Rep. Wilson of being part of the “deep state” and a “degraded politician.”

This bill draws parallels to the 2023 “Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act” led by Rep. Wilson, which aimed to prevent recognition of the Bashar al-Assad government in Syria. The Act was successfully passed last February and signed into law by President Biden.

While the decision to recognize a government ultimately lies with the president, lawmakers have historically played a significant role in shaping U.S. foreign policy. The U.S. Congress has a tradition of not recognizing illegitimate regimes, as seen in the case of the Russian occupation of Ukrainian Crimea and Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The bill proposes recognizing Salome Zourabichvili as the legitimate President of Georgia before the fraudulent elections in October 2024. It also allows for the restoration of the Georgian constitution through free and fair elections to nullify this policy.

Despite current tensions in U.S.-Georgian relations, there is optimism that with the right policies, the relationship can be restored. It is crucial for the U.S. to support the legitimate political opposition in Georgia and ensure the country’s path towards democracy and freedom.
