Blue state attorney general advises state officials on how to resist ‘draconian’ Trump deportations

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has taken a strong stance against President-elect Donald Trump and border czar Tom Homan’s plans for mass deportations. Bonta recently issued new guidance to various state-run agencies, including courthouses, healthcare facilities, universities, schools, labor agencies, public libraries, and shelters, requiring them to adopt policies to resist what he calls Trump’s “draconian” and “inhumane” immigration enforcement actions.

In a press event announcing the guidance, Bonta emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of California’s immigrants and preventing a culture of fear and mistrust from hindering immigrants from accessing vital public services. The guidance provides model policies and recommendations for public institutions to comply with California law limiting state and local participation in immigration enforcement activities.

The guidance refers state agencies to the “California Values Act,” a 2017 law that prohibits state and local law enforcement agencies from assisting with immigration enforcement, with limited exceptions. It also includes measures such as prohibiting the unauthorized collection or disclosure of information related to an individual’s or family’s citizenship or immigration status, as well as establishing a policy of always referring federal law enforcement officials to a designated person who can respond to immigration enforcement-related requests.

Bonta, who immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines at a young age, believes that Trump’s deportation plan is fiscally irresponsible and considers immigrants to be the backbone of the nation. He has been vocal in his opposition to Trump’s immigration agenda, calling it draconian and xenophobic.

However, Bonta’s actions have faced criticism from figures like former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who argues that California politicians like Bonta and Gov. Gavin Newsom are costing taxpayers significant sums by attracting illegal immigrants with benefits like free healthcare. McCarthy believes that concerns over illegal immigration and violent crime by illegal migrants played a significant role in Trump’s re-election in 2024.

Despite the criticism, Bonta remains steadfast in his commitment to protecting immigrants’ safety, freedoms, and rights. He believes that it is the responsibility of the attorney general to ensure the well-being of all citizens and residents, regardless of their immigration status. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Bonta’s actions highlight the ongoing debate over immigration policies and the role of state governments in shaping them.
