Blue state leader sounds alarm about ‘perfect storm’ of Dem policies decimating public safety

Massachusetts state Sen. Ryan Fattman, a Republican, is raising alarms about a series of Democratic policies that he believes are negatively impacting public safety and driving up the cost of living in the state. One major policy that Fattman is concerned about is the 2017 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling in Lunn vs. Commonwealth, which prohibits local and state law enforcement agencies from assisting with immigration enforcement.

This ruling also prevents law enforcement from honoring ICE “detainer” requests, which often results in dangerous criminal illegal immigrants being released onto the streets without notifying ICE. Fattman highlighted cases where criminal illegals charged with crimes like child rape and fentanyl trafficking were released by Massachusetts law enforcement agencies on bail as low as $500 or with no bail at all, only to be re-arrested by ICE.

According to Fattman, these incidents are not isolated and are happening throughout the state. He also pointed to the Massachusetts “Right to Shelter” law, which has led to the establishment of a large network of migrant shelters that has cost the state over $3 billion since 2021. Whistleblowers have raised concerns about abuse within the shelter system, including drug trafficking and instances of sexual assault.

Fattman emphasized the significant financial burden that these policies are placing on Massachusetts taxpayers and the strain they are putting on cities and towns across the state. He attributed the current crisis to Governor Maura Healey and the Democratic majority legislature, calling out the wasteful spending on individuals who are unlikely to become legal residents.

In response to these challenges, Fattman introduced the “Shield Act,” a bill aimed at overturning the Lunn decision and allowing local and state law enforcement to collaborate with ICE to prevent criminal illegal immigrants from being released onto the streets. Despite Massachusetts being known as a blue state, Fattman expressed optimism that citizens will demand change from their leaders.

Fattman stressed the need for safety and security for Massachusetts residents and the importance of holding policymakers accountable for their actions. He pointed out that the current situation is unsustainable and that pressure is building for change. Ultimately, Fattman believes that the time has come for action to address the public safety and financial concerns facing the state.
