US Election 2024

Blue state Republican aims to evict Dems from 20-year hold on governor’s mansion

Republican Rep. Mike Lawler’s scathing criticism of Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York is making waves in political circles. In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Lawler didn’t hold back his views on the current governor.

“I think Kathy Hochul is the most feckless, incompetent governor in America,” Lawler asserted. The congressman, who represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, is contemplating a run for governor in 2026. He is joined by two other Republicans, Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman and town supervisor Carl Hyde Jr., in exploring a potential challenge to Hochul.

It’s been over two decades since a Republican has won a gubernatorial election in New York, but Lawler believes that Hochul’s approval ratings and favorable ratings are on shaky ground, giving hope to the GOP. The governor also faces potential primary challenges from her lieutenant governor, Antonio Delgado, and Rep. Ritchie Torres.

Lawler highlighted the challenges facing New Yorkers, including high costs of living, a migrant crisis, and a rise in crime. He emphasized the need for balance and common sense in governance, asserting that New Yorkers are pragmatic and understand the need for change.

On the other hand, Democrats defended Hochul, praising her efforts to lower costs for families and protect fundamental rights. They criticized Republicans for aligning with former President Donald Trump, warning that such alliances could harm the GOP’s chances in the upcoming election.

Lawler emphasized the importance of addressing key issues such as the economy, the border crisis, and the SALT deduction cap. He believes that presenting a viable alternative vision to New Yorkers is crucial in winning their support.

Despite his potential run for governor, Lawler remains open to receiving support from President Trump. However, he acknowledges that New Yorkers will ultimately base their decision on the candidate’s leadership, vision, and plans to tackle pressing issues like housing, infrastructure, and crime.

As the political landscape in New York heats up, Lawler and his Republican counterparts are gearing up for a fierce battle against Hochul and the Democratic establishment. The 2026 gubernatorial election is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for the state, with both parties vying for control and a chance to shape the future of New York.
