Boston Councilwoman Sharon Durkan clarifies Tom Homan remarks after fiery post

Boston City Council member Sharon Durkan recently made headlines for mocking Border Czar Tom Homan’s employment history, but has since walked back her comments in a follow-up post. Durkan, who accused Homan of only policing a small town, clarified her remarks after a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

In her clarification post, Durkan acknowledged that Homan spent his career as a federal agent within Border Patrol and ICE, emphasizing that his background is in immigration enforcement, not community policing. She explained that the realities of policing a major city, where trust and accountability are key, are vastly different from Homan’s experience.

Durkan’s initial comments came after Homan criticized Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox for enforcing the city’s sanctuary policies during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Homan specifically called out Boston for releasing criminal migrants back into the streets instead of honoring ICE detainers.

The councilwoman’s original post, which mocked Homan’s brief stint as a police officer in a small town before joining Border Patrol, drew backlash for implying that he was unqualified to enforce border policies in Boston. However, Homan worked his way through the ranks of both the Obama and Trump administrations after his time in the small-town department.

Boston and Massachusetts have seen several arrests of criminal migrants in recent weeks, including an illegal immigrant connected to a violent Brazilian gang. Cox has stated that the Boston Police Department does not enforce detainers filed by ICE, as they abide by Boston and Massachusetts law.

Durkan’s clarification post comes after Homan criticized Boston for its handling of criminal migrants and sanctuary policies. It remains to be seen how this exchange will impact the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement in Boston and beyond.
