FIRST ON FOX: The Department of Justice has taken legal action against Boston, alleging that the city’s policies protect illegal immigrants from federal authorities. This move represents an escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Trump administration and the Democratic stronghold.

The lawsuit specifically names Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the city’s police commissioner, focusing on the Boston Trust Act. This law prohibits local police from cooperating with certain requests from federal immigration authorities.

“[Wu’s] resistance endangers public safety, resulting in a number of criminals being released into Boston who should have been held for immigration removal from the United States,” stated DOJ attorneys in the complaint.

This legal action is part of a series of measures taken by the DOJ against cities and states labeled as sanctuaries for illegal immigrants. The department has previously sent warning letters to various jurisdictions and has filed lawsuits against Colorado, California, Illinois, and others.

A federal judge dismissed the DOJ’s lawsuit against Illinois, citing constitutional protections for state and local policies. The Trump administration’s legal battles with sanctuary cities resemble those from the previous administration, with unresolved cases like the lawsuit against California’s sanctuary policies.

Attorney General Pam Bondi criticized Wu and Boston, labeling them as some of the worst sanctuary city offenders in the country. Bondi emphasized that these policies undermine law enforcement efforts and shield illegal aliens from justice.

“If Boston won’t protect its citizens from illegal alien crime, this Department of Justice will,” Bondi declared.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Wu’s office for comment.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
