Boyle, Alta., residents band together as wildfire evacuation forces them from homes

Former volunteer firefighter Steve Wilcox expressed his desire to be on the frontlines fighting the wildfire that has forced residents of Boyle to evacuate. Despite not being physically able to fight the fire due to his age, Wilcox is actively involved in ensuring the safety of his community.

As the manager of the Aspen Grove Mobile Home Park in Boyle, Wilcox went door to door to ensure that everyone was prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. He emphasized the importance of being proactive and ready to leave quickly in the face of danger. Wilcox commended the community for their swift response to the evacuation order, stating that everyone was out of the park within 15 minutes, showcasing their preparedness and unity during a crisis.

The evacuation order for Boyle was issued late Tuesday night, with residents in Athabasca County also being asked to leave their homes due to the fire’s proximity to the community. Wilcox, along with all other residents of Boyle, were directed to travel to a reception centre in Lac La Biche for safety.

The wildfire near Boyle has grown from 300 hectares to over 1,000 hectares, posing a significant threat to the area. Despite efforts to contain the fire, the evacuation order remains in effect as a precaution. Fire crews are working tirelessly to control the blaze, with support from Alberta Wildfire crews utilizing helicopters, air tankers, and dozers.

Boyle Mayor Colin Derko highlighted the challenges faced by firefighters, including dry and windy weather conditions, as well as difficult terrain that hinders access to the fire. He urged residents to comply with the evacuation order and emphasized the importance of safety above all else.
