Brampton man, 51, killed in shooting had faced repeated threats, children say

Peel Regional Police have confirmed the identity of a Brampton man who tragically lost his life in a targeted shooting in a Mississauga parking lot this week. Harjeet Dhadda, 51, was fatally shot multiple times near Tranmere Drive and Telford Way, close to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Despite efforts by emergency personnel to save him, Dhadda succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

The suspects responsible for the shooting fled the scene in a stolen black 2018 Dodge Challenger, which was later recovered by police. Const. Michelle Stafford assured the public that this was an isolated incident and there is currently no threat to public safety.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Dhadda worked as a commercial insurance broker. His children took to social media to express their grief and frustration over the loss of their father. His daughter, Gurlin Dhadda, revealed that her father had been receiving threats in recent years, which were reported to the authorities. She criticized the lack of protection provided to her family despite the clear signs of danger.

Similarly, Dhadda’s son, Tanveer Singh Dhadda, called on political leaders to reevaluate the laws in Canada, emphasizing that his father was a law-abiding citizen who did not deserve such a tragic end. Both children described their father as a respected member of the community and a devoted family man.

Peel police have acknowledged the circulating information regarding the homicide but assured the public that the investigation is ongoing. Chief Nishan Duraiappah highlighted a concerning trend of extortion attempts targeting business owners, particularly those of South Asian descent. In response, the Peel Regional Police Extortion Investigative Task Force was established to address these threats and has seen success in apprehending suspects and seizing illicit items.

The South Asian community in British Columbia has also reported similar extortion threats, with RCMP linking some acts of violence to Indian government agents. As the investigation into Dhadda’s death continues, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.

In light of this tragic event, the community mourns the loss of a beloved individual and demands justice for Harjeet Dhadda. The impact of targeted violence and extortion on innocent lives underscores the importance of addressing these issues and ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
