Brandon Gill impeachment resolution against judge gains more support

U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg is facing growing support for his impeachment, despite some hesitation from House GOP leaders. The resolution to impeach Boasberg was introduced by Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, last month after the judge issued an emergency order halting the Trump administration’s deportation flights under the Alien Enemies Act. The resolution now has a total of 22 co-sponsors, including Reps. Josh Brecheen, R-Okla., Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., and Paul Gosar, R-Ariz.
President Donald Trump has been using the Alien Enemies Act to deport suspected Tren De Aragua gang members to a detention facility in El Salvador. Boasberg’s legal standoff with the Trump administration, which includes allegations that the White House ignored his initial order, has caused a stir in Capitol Hill. Republicans view this as an example of “rogue judges” obstructing Trump’s agenda, with Trump himself calling for Boasberg’s impeachment over the issue.
Despite the growing support for impeachment, House GOP leaders are hesitant to pursue this route, believing it to be less effective in holding judges accountable. More than a dozen injunctions have been issued against various Trump policies, leading to concerns about the use of impeachment as a method to target judges. Gill’s resolution accuses Boasberg of abusing his power, but the likelihood of success in the House remains uncertain.
In the meantime, House Republicans are rallying around legislation introduced by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., to limit district judges’ ability to issue nationwide injunctions. This bill is expected to receive a vote soon. While Gill could force a House-wide vote on the impeachment resolution by reintroducing it as a “privileged resolution,” there are currently no plans to do so.
Overall, the impeachment resolution against Judge James Boasberg continues to generate debate and discussion among House Republicans. The political landscape surrounding this issue remains complex, with differing opinions on the most effective way to address judicial actions that conflict with the administration’s policies.
