Julia Schell scores 6 tries to power Canada to win at Women’s Rugby World Cup
Julia Schell Scores Six Tries as Canada Dominates Fiji at Women’s Rugby World Cup
Julia Schell put on a masterclass performance on Saturday as Canada secured a resounding 65-7 victory over Fiji in their opening match at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in York, England.
Schell’s incredible feat saw her score all six of her tries in a blistering 22-minute spell in the second half, cementing her place in World Cup history.
Record-Equalling Performance
With her six tries, Schell equaled the second-highest number of tries scored in a World Cup match, a record shared with Krista McFarren of the U.S. in 1994. The record for most tries in a single match stands at eight, achieved by Portia Woodman-Wickliffe of New Zealand in 2017.
Canada, ranked second in the world and unbeaten in eight tests this year, showcased their dominance throughout the game, setting a new record for the team with Schell’s six tries.
Canada’s Commanding Performance
Canada wasted no time in asserting their dominance, securing a bonus-point try early on in the match. Lock Sophie de Goede and hooker Gillian Boag got the ball rolling with the first two tries, followed by scores from flanker Caroline Crossley and wing Alysha Corrigan.
Despite a spirited effort from Fiji, who managed to score a try of their own early in the second half, the match belonged to Canada, with Schell stealing the show.
Red Card Drama
The game saw a moment of controversy as Fiji’s replacement prop Bulou Vasutaraga received a red card for a dangerous high tackle, becoming only the second woman to be sent off in the tournament.
Canada’s emphatic victory sets the tone for their World Cup campaign as they aim to clinch their first-ever title in the competition.
