Bruins’ McAvoy still in hospital after developing infection in injured shoulder

Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is currently hospitalized with a serious injury to his right shoulder that has developed an infection, the team announced on Wednesday. The injury occurred during a game against Finland in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, where McAvoy injured his AC joint and was initially treated by Team USA medical staff.

Unfortunately, McAvoy’s pain worsened upon returning to Boston, leading to further testing and the discovery of an infection. Doctors have been treating the infection, and McAvoy is said to be improving under their care. The 27-year-old defenseman, known for his physical play and impact on the ice, will be sorely missed by his team in the upcoming championship game against Canada at the TD Garden.

Head coach Mike Sullivan, who is also McAvoy’s father-in-law, expressed disappointment for his player, noting that the tournament held significant meaning for McAvoy. As an assistant captain on the 4 Nations roster, McAvoy had been a key contributor to the American team before his injury.

With McAvoy sidelined, Sullivan mentioned the possibility of reigning Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes stepping in as a replacement. However, Hughes was unavailable as he remained with the Vancouver Canucks at the time of the announcement.

Despite the setback, the tournament continues to generate excitement, with intense matchups and thrilling moments on the ice. In a recent game between the U.S. and Canada, three fights broke out within a span of just nine seconds, showcasing the intensity and rivalry between the North American teams.

As McAvoy focuses on his recovery, his absence will be felt by the Bruins and his teammates. Fans and supporters are sending well wishes for a speedy recovery, hoping to see McAvoy back on the ice soon. In the meantime, the team will need to regroup and adjust their lineup as they prepare for the championship game without one of their key players.
