Burt ‘Crocodile Dundee’ dies at 90

Burt, the Legendary Crocodile from “Crocodile Dundee,” Passes Away

Burt, the massive crocodile who gained fame with a cameo in the movie “Crocodile Dundee” and continued to captivate visitors with his fiery temperament and imposing presence, has sadly passed away.

The news of Burt’s passing was announced by the Crocosaurus Cove reptile aquarium in Darwin, Australia, over the weekend. Believed to be at least 90 years old, Burt left behind a legacy that won’t soon be forgotten.

Described as having an independent nature, Burt was known as a confirmed bachelor, a trait he displayed prominently during his earlier years at a crocodile farm, according to social media posts from Crocosaurus Cove.

“He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a force of nature, a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures. Though his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those who worked with him and the thousands who visited him over the years,” the aquarium expressed.

Burt, a saltwater crocodile measuring over 5 meters (16 feet) in length, was captured in the 1980s in the Reynolds River and went on to become one of the most renowned crocodiles globally, as per Crocosaurus Cove.

In the 1986 film starring Paul Hogan as the rugged crocodile hunter Mick Dundee, Burt made a brief appearance. While American Sue Charlton, portrayed by Linda Kozlowski, encounters a crocodile in a watering hole, it is Dundee who ultimately saves the day.

Burt is seen lunging out of the water in a quick shot, though the creature shown in more detail during the rescue scene is actually an American alligator, as noted by the Internet Movie Database.

Following his arrival at the Australian aquarium in 2008, Burt became a prominent attraction, with the facility featuring a unique “Cage of Death,” known as the nation’s only crocodile dive. Crocosaurus Cove plans to pay tribute to Burt’s extraordinary life with a commemorative sign celebrating his legacy and the memorable experiences he shared with visitors during his time at the park.
