Caitlin Clark downplays flagrant foul on Angel Reese in Fever’s win over Sky

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark had an explosive start to the 2025 WNBA season, recording a triple-double in her team’s dominant 93-58 victory over the Chicago Sky on Saturday. However, the game was not without controversy as Clark was involved in a heated exchange with Sky center Angel Reese after a flagrant foul.
The incident occurred when Reese was called for an offensive foul, and Clark, in an attempt to prevent an easy layup, fouled her intentionally. The foul led to a confrontation between the two players, with Reese appearing visibly upset. Despite the tension on the court, both Clark and Reese downplayed the incident after the game.
Clark, who finished the game with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, insisted that the foul was a standard basketball play and not intended to be malicious. Reese echoed this sentiment, describing it as a typical play that happens in the course of a game. Reese, who struggled with her shooting in the season opener, scored 12 points on 5 of 14 shooting and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.
The rivalry between Clark and Reese dates back to their college days and has intensified since both players entered the WNBA. Last season, the Fever won three out of four matchups against the Sky, with several hard fouls sparking national debate.
Fever head coach Stephanie White defended Clark’s foul, emphasizing the team’s commitment to tough defense. The officials explained that the foul met the criteria for a flagrant foul due to the extension of Clark’s left hand into Reese’s back, which was deemed unnecessary contact.
Despite the controversy, the sold-out crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse rallied behind their team, cheering as Reese missed a free throw following the foul. The game ended with the Fever securing a convincing victory over the Sky.
The rivalry between Clark and Reese adds an extra layer of competitiveness to the Fever-Sky matchups, making them must-watch games for WNBA fans. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the two star players as they continue to battle it out on the court.
