Calgary Flames beat N.Y. Islanders 2-1
Calgary Flames Secure Another Close Victory Despite Offensive Struggles
Despite facing challenges with their offense, the Calgary Flames managed to secure a narrow victory on Tuesday night, maintaining their winning streak.
The rookie goaltender, Dustin Wolf, played a crucial role in the game by making 28 saves, while Rasmus Andersson scored the tying goal in the third period, leading the Flames to a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders. This victory marks the Flames’ sixth win in their last seven games, with four wins and two losses in extra time.
Andersson praised Wolf’s exceptional performance, stating, “Wolfie was unbelievable, especially at the start of the third. He saved us there.”
Despite being down 1-0 after Pierre Engvall’s goal in the second period, the Flames intensified their efforts in the third period. Wolf’s crucial saves, including a remarkable pad stop against Bo Horvat, kept Calgary in the game.
The Flames managed to equalize the score at 8:17 in the third period with Andersson’s powerful shot from the blue line on a power play opportunity.
Coach Ryan Huska identified Wolf’s saves as a turning point in the game, allowing the team to capitalize on the power play and secure the crucial goal.
Despite struggling to score more than three goals in a game since their explosive start to the season, the Flames have shown resilience by consistently earning points in tight games. Their ability to score crucial goals in the third period or overtime has propelled them to second place in the Pacific Division, just one point behind the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Flames’ power play, which has been struggling, managed to convert on their only opportunity in the game, with Andersson breaking his scoring drought with a vital goal.
Reflecting on the team’s offensive struggles, Huska mentioned the importance of players being willing to shoot the puck and praised their determination to score when needed.
Wolf’s stellar performance continued in the shootout, with Calgary securing the win with goals from Andrei Kuzmenko and Justin Kirkland, while Wolf denied the Islanders’ attempts to score.
Kirkland expressed satisfaction with the team’s effort, stating, “We battled hard right to the end and were willing to do whatever it took to secure the two points.”
