In a shocking case that has gripped the city of Calgary, a 40-year-old man named Duran Ross Buffalo has been found guilty of raping a 90-year-old woman in her seniors’ residence apartment in 2021.
The trial, which took place this week, saw Buffalo facing charges of aggravated sexual assault and break and enter to commit sexual assault for an attack that occurred on January 1, 2021.
After just an hour of deliberation, the jurors delivered guilty verdicts on both charges late Friday afternoon, bringing justice to the victim and her family.
The conviction was secured after a disturbing 911 call was played in the courtroom, featuring the voice of the traumatized 90-year-old woman who had just been raped in her assisted living apartment.
Tragically, the 90-year-old woman passed away last year, and a publication ban is in place to protect her identity.
Initially, the police did not believe the woman had been raped, attributing her confusion to dementia and sending her to a hospital for a potential bladder infection. However, after Buffalo’s shirt was found in the assisted living home, the woman underwent a rape kit exam.
Buffalo chose to represent himself at the trial, a decision that ultimately led to his guilty verdict.
The sentencing phase will be heard by Court of King’s Bench Justice Michele Hollins, with prosecutor Matt Dalidowicz presenting arguments at a later date. The case has been adjourned for several weeks to allow for a pre-sentencing report to be prepared.
For anyone who has been sexually assaulted, it is important to know that support is available through crisis lines and local support services. The Ending Violence Association of Canada database can provide valuable resources and assistance.
