Calgary Musician returns to the hometown for the ultrasound of Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil’s Echo: A Musical Journey
Cirque du Soleil is renowned for its breathtaking acrobatics and daring stunts, but in the new production of Echo, the singers face a different kind of challenge. They must master CirqueSespeak, a unique form of linguistic gymnastics that involves blending elements of different languages to create a distinctive form of “gibberish” sung during the show.
Lizzy Munson, a cellist and singer from Calgary, is one of the seven musician singers in Echo. She describes CirqueSespeak as a steep learning curve, initially struggling to remember a series of syllables. However, with time and practice, she has become accustomed to singing in this unconventional language.
Having previously performed in Cirque du Soleil’s KA and Fuzion, Munson is no stranger to the company’s innovative approach to music and performance. In Echo, she plays a unique role as one of the shadow-like musicians on stage, adding an ominous and nurturing presence to the narrative.
The story of Echo revolves around a young character named Future and her dog, Ewai, who discover a mysterious cube that holds significance throughout the show. With striking visuals, captivating music, and mesmerizing acrobatics, the production explores themes of self-discovery, environmentalism, and our connection to the world around us.
Artistic director Fabrice Lemire emphasizes the universal themes of Echo, appealing to audiences of all ages. The metaphor of the cube symbolizes self-exploration and reflection, resonating with the inner dialogue many of us experience.
Echo features 53 artists, including acrobats, dancers, and musicians like Munson. Since its debut in Montreal in 2023, the production has toured various cities in North America, captivating audiences with its unique blend of music, acrobatics, and storytelling.
Munson reflects on the collaborative nature of the show’s creation process, with constant revisions and adjustments made to ensure a seamless and captivating performance. As Echo prepares to open in Stampede Park on August 30, audiences can expect a musical journey unlike any other, filled with mystery, intrigue, and awe-inspiring performances.
Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Cirque du Soleil’s Echo, running from August 30 to October 19 in Stampede Park. Get ready to be transported into a world of magic, music, and wonder unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
