Calgary Native Wes Martin feels love at 2025 Rogers Charity Classic

Who is the most popular Canadian among fans on the Rogers Charity Classic 2025?

Maybe not who you would expect.

Not Mike Weir.

Not Stephen Ames.

“Feel sure,” said Calgary’s own Wes Martin, of the love that came from the tens of thousands of supporters at the hand at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club.

“Yes, I have more texts (Friday) night and more friends and family showing up (Saturday). And … you know … there are more people out, and it is absolutely a lot of ‘go, wes, go!’ The fans are great. ”

The local gives them every reason to make him feel that way.

Martin, 52, bought a semi-under 68 in the second round of Saturday to give him the best score after 36-hole-on 5-under 135-under Canadians.

Then weir, from Brights Grove, is on 1-below 139. Then it is Gordon Burns, Van Holland Landing, Ont., On Even-Par 140. And finally the former resident of Calgary, is an important reason why the tournament came 2-over 142.

“I played a few times before with Mike in the Desert Tour, long ago when it was an event in Oak Valley in California,” said Martin. “Never played with Stephen. And I played with Gordon.

“Top Canadian would be quite cool.”

But his real goal at this event?

That would be a top 10 finish, in an attempt to qualify for next week’s event at the PGA Tour Champions Circuit, the Ally Challenge in Michigan.

Martin is bound for the 21st on his way to the last 18 holes on Sunday, so he needs a push from the last round-much better, he knows, than what he achieved on Saturday.

“I made some good saves – some bogeys that were not terrible,” said Martin. “The shot (in the water) on the 18 is rather disappointing, but to save that par was huge. I found a decent place (on the drop). I just hit it and it worked perfectly.”

Indeed, he hit it within a few feet of the pen to ignite the crowd in the last hole.

And his reaction was priceless, while he turned around and shot his fist in the air.

His best shot, however, was when he almost got the par-3 fifth from 165 yards.

“I almost closed it,” said Martin. “Yes … like the Bal Mark was about two centimeters from the hole.

“Actually I felt less nerves (Saturday), but the swing didn’t feel that it was on,” Martin continued. “Many guide shots from the steering wheel.

“One three-putt … I stayed behind all day. But I can’t complain.”

Because he is here next to the pros, where he was not a week ago and wondered if he would ever be.

Remember that he won his way to the tournament through the qualification, with a wowzer of a round-a 9-under-year-old-dinsdag.

So Martin clearly has it in his game to jump the leaderboard in the top 10. But to earn a ticket for the Warwick Golf & Country Club next week in Grand Blanc, Mich. Charity Classic.

“I don’t complain, especially the way I felt in recent days,” added Martin. “I have been nervous. But I hope to free it up (Sunday).”
