The Head of Canada’s Major Projects Office to Earn Up to $679,000 Annually

The head of the federal government’s new Major Projects Office will earn a salary between $577,000 and $679,000 a year, according to an order in council issued last week.

Appointment of Dawn Farrell

Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed Dawn Farrell, former CEO and chair of the board of directors of the Trans Mountain Corporation, to lead the Calgary-based office. Farrell brings nearly four decades of experience in the energy industry to her new role.

Accelerating Major Infrastructure Projects

The Liberals have committed to expediting approvals for major infrastructure projects deemed to be in the national interest, with the new Major Projects Office tasked with overseeing this process. The office will be headquartered in Calgary but will also have offices in other major Canadian cities.

Salary Comparison

Farrell’s salary falls within the maximum range for Crown corporation CEOs, according to the government’s website. In comparison, the head of Canada Post earns between $506,000 and $596,000, while the CBC president’s salary ranges from $468,000 to $551,000.

Experience in the Energy Industry

Prior to her appointment, Farrell served as an executive vice-president for B.C. Hydro and CEO of TransAlta, one of Canada’s largest wind power producers. She took on the role of CEO at Trans Mountain in 2022. In 2021, Farrell earned $7.8 million in total compensation from TransAlta, as reported in the company’s shareholders’ report.
