Calgary’s McMahon Stadium to host the 2026 Grey Cup

The 113th Grey Cup is set to take place in Calgary in 2026, as announced by CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie. The championship game is scheduled to be held at McMahon Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2026. This will mark the sixth time that Calgary has hosted the Grey Cup, with previous games held at McMahon in 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009, and 2019.

Ambrosie praised Calgary for its hospitality and ability to throw a great party, expressing excitement for what he believes will be one of the greatest Grey Cup celebrations of all time. The announcement was made at McMahon Stadium alongside Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek, Calgary Sports and Entertainment president and CEO Robert Hayes, Calgary Stampeders president Jay McNeil, and Alberta Minister of Tourism and Sport Joseph Schow.

In preparation for the event, Stampede Park will host a Grey Cup Festival throughout the week leading up to the game. The festival will feature a series of nightly concerts and a Grey Cup Rodeo, similar to the one held ahead of the 2019 Grey Cup.

Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming game, Ambrosie had previously called for discussions on replacing McMahon Stadium, citing its outdated facilities. He expressed a desire for the 2019 Grey Cup to be the last one hosted at McMahon, acknowledging that the stadium does not meet modern standards compared to newer venues in Regina and Winnipeg.

McNeil, on the other hand, mentioned plans to work with the CFL and the McMahon Stadium Society to improve the stadium ahead of the 2026 Grey Cup. Suggestions include expanding concourses to accommodate more food and beverage options and washrooms. Additionally, with Calgary set to receive a new hockey arena, discussions about a new stadium for the team are also on the table.

The economic benefits of hosting the Grey Cup in Calgary were emphasized by Schow, who estimated a return of over $50 million to the city. The province has pledged $4 million towards the event, although this funding will not be used for renovating McMahon Stadium. Conversations regarding the stadium’s needs are ongoing as the city prepares to welcome football fans from across the country for the 113th Grey Cup in 2026.
